Promote your role to job boards

Learn how to advertise a published job on external job boards from the Promote tab - search for channels, order a campaign, and follow how it performs.

What is Promote?

Promote is where you advertise a published job on external job boards. From the Promote tab on a job position you can search a catalogue of job boards, put the ones you want into a campaign, pay for it, and then follow how each board performs - clicks and applications - without leaving Alva.

Promoting is not the same as publishing. Publishing makes your job visible on your Alva career site, on Alva Marketplace, or in your own ATS, and it costs nothing. Promoting buys paid placements on third-party job boards on top of that. See Set up Job Ad & Publish Job for the publishing step.

Promote is for recruiters who have a job open, are not getting enough relevant applicants, and want to widen the reach of the ad.

Before you can promote

The job needs a career site. Job boards need a public page to send applicants to, so a job cannot be promoted until its career site is enabled. If it is not, the Promote tab shows the message "Enable this job's career site to start promoting it" with an Enable career site button. Click it and the promotion options appear.

If you want to brand that page before you start advertising, see Build your Alva Career Site.

You need a company logo. Job board listings require one. If your organisation has a logo it is used automatically; otherwise you will be asked to upload one when you fill in the posting details.

Your job ad needs to be finished. The job title and job description you have already written are what gets sent to the boards, so review them before ordering rather than after.

Find the right job boards

Open the job position and select the Promote tab. If you have not ordered anything for this job yet, you land straight in the search view under Promote your role.

The search view has two tabs. Advertise to job boards is the catalogue of boards you can buy. My contracts is for organisations that bring their own job board contracts.

Results are grouped into three sections:

  • Recommended - boards Alva suggests based on the role

  • Other channels - everything else that matches your search

  • Saved - boards you have bookmarked

Narrowing the list

Use the Filters sidebar on the left to cut the catalogue down:

  • Search by name, using Search by name and the Search button

  • Job function

  • Work locations

  • Industries

Clear all resets every filter at once. Use Sort by above the results to reorder them by Most relevant, Price: Low to high or Price: High to low.

Looking at a single board

Click More information on any board to open Channel details, which shows the Channel, Type, Description, Pricing, Duration, Locations and a link to the board's Homepage. Where a board is discounted you will see both the Price and the Original price.

Bookmark saves a board to the Saved section so you can come back to it for the next role. You can save up to 50 boards. If a board you saved is withdrawn from the catalogue, a banner tells you how many saved products are no longer available and offers Remove to clear them out.

Put your campaign together

Click Add to campaign on each board you want. The button changes to Remove from campaign so you can take it out again. A bar at the bottom of the screen keeps a running count of your basket and its total price.

Click the basket to open Basket, which lists the channels you have chosen with the List price, any Discount, and the Total amount. Remove anything you have changed your mind about here.

When the basket is right, click Checkout.

Fill in the posting details

Checkout does not go straight to payment. First you land on Promote your role, a form that supplies the boards with everything they need to publish the ad. It is split into four sections.

Target group - who the ad should reach:

  • Job function

  • Industry

  • Education level

  • Seniority

Recruiter info - Full name and Email address (optional).

Posting details - what the ad says and where the role is:

  • Campaign name (optional) - for your own reference; if you leave it blank the campaign is listed as Campaign from the order date

  • Job title

  • Job description

  • Contract type

  • Organization, with your logo. If none is set you will see "A logo is required for your job board listings"; if one is set you will see "Your organization logo will be used if you do not upload a new one"

  • Work address, Postcode, City and Country

  • Allows remote work

Posting requirements - some boards ask for extra fields of their own. Anything required by a board in your basket appears here, per board. You cannot continue until they are filled in.

Click Continue to go to payment, or Back to return to the search results.

Pay and confirm your order

The last step is Payment details. It repeats your Basket and shows:

  • Delivery time - how long the boards take to put the campaign online.

  • Payment method - Pay with Credit Card, which sends you to a secure Stripe checkout, or Pay with Invoice, which adds the amount to your monthly Alva invoice. Pay with Invoice only appears if your organisation's plan and pricing model allow invoicing. If you do not see it, card payment is the only option for your organisation.

  • List price, Discount and Total amount - note that VAT may be added on top of the price shown.

Click Complete payment, then confirm in the Confirm payment dialog. You will briefly see "Confirming your payment and creating your campaign…" before the campaign appears.

If the payment goes through but the campaign has not shown up yet, you will see "Payment received - your campaign will appear here shortly". That is expected and will resolve on its own.

💡Note: Your first order may take up to 6 working days to go live on your selected job board, later orders are usually quicker.

Follow your campaigns

Once a job has at least one campaign, the Promote tab opens on Active campaigns. Each campaign is a card showing the JOB ID, the campaign name, the Order date and the Last modified date, and a Job Description URL you can copy and hand to anyone who asks where the ad points.

Show campaign details expands the card. Inside you get the Target audience you selected and a table with one row per board:

  • Channel - the board

  • Status

  • Start date and End date - Not delivered yet until the board publishes

  • Clicks

  • Applications

  • Board link - View posting opens the live ad on the board

  • Actions

Click Create new campaign at the top to start another campaign for the same job.

Editing a campaign that is already live

Whether a live campaign can be edited depends on the job boards in it.

  • If the boards support editing, the campaign card has an Edit option.

  • If they do not, the card carries a Non-editable badge.

Editing a live campaign can cost money:

  • An Editing fee dialog appears before the form, warning that the campaign may have an editing fee which will be charged after publishing.

  • Continue with editing accepts the fee. Close backs out.

After you save:

  • The campaign shows an Edit pending badge while the boards process the change.

  • Edit is unavailable for about five minutes.

  • Changes take a few minutes to appear on the boards themselves.

Refunds show as a badge on the campaign:

  • Refunded, with the amount and date.

  • Refund processing, while it is under way.

  • Refund failed - contact support, if something went wrong.
