How to set time limits for Alva’s coding tests

Learn how to set a time limit on a coding test, and what happens when a candidate submits after it has passed.

What is a coding test time limit?

When you add a coding test to a job position in Alva, you can apply a time limit for how long candidates are allowed to work on their assigned coding test.

Setting a time limit

You can control how long candidates have to complete their coding assignment by applying a time limit.

To set a time limit:

  1. Go to the job’s Assessments tab.

  2. Under your selected coding test, click Set time limit.

  3. Choose the desired number of hours and minutes.

  4. Click Set time limit, then Apply to confirm.

How does the time limit work?

  • The timer starts when the candidate opens their coding test.

  • Candidates can still submit results after the limit has passed, but these will be marked as late. You will see one score before the time limit and other score x minutes after the time is up.

  • You can view late submissions in the candidate’s details view.

Good to know: Setting a very short time limit can create unnecessary stress and negatively impact the candidate experience. Consider allowing enough time for candidates to complete the task comfortably.

💡 Note: This does not remove a candidate's access to the coding test repository! Rather, they are allowed to continue working and can make a late submission if they so want.

Late submissions

If a candidate submits their assignment outside of the time limit, it will be marked as late. Their coding test score will be reported as a Coding test score beyond time limit. In the candidate details, you can also see how late the submission was made.
